Baggage space
It is very important to consider the amount of baggage you will be
bringing with you on holiday and the amount of available space in
each vehicle. Obviously, when an economy car is reserved the space
available for luggage of its passengers will be limited. The 7 Seat
Bus is a “people carrier” and has very limited luggage space. Please
consider carefully the luggage space you need when booking your
vehicle and especially if it includes golf bags.
C.D.W. means what?
These initials mean “Collision, Damage, Waiver”. Should an accident
occur which is viewed by lawn to be the "hire driver's"
fault, then this driver is personally responsible for the payment
of the vehicle damage up to a certain figure and this is known as
the "Excess". Any balance above this "Excess"
is paid out by the insurance company.
Children’s Seats
Booster seats are supplied on request and some Agents add a charge
for this service. Spot road checks by police are a common feature
in Portugal so we strongly advise that you act within the Portuguese
law.
Emergency - Accident
When an accident occurs which involves your vehicle make immediate
contact for assistance with the local telephone number on your
Green Card which is kept usually in the glove compartments and
provides 24 hour emergency service. There are two telephone numbers
also shown on the Insurance Stamp on your windscreen. The first
number (Assistência) is for general assistance. The second number
(Sinistros) is in for accidents. The phone number in Portugal to
call the police is 112 and request that they come to your location
and make a report. It is essential for the insurance
companies to have the police report.
Exchange contact names and addresses with the other driver and any
available witnesses. If you have a camera a few photos can be a
good idea. Make drawing of the scene with approximate distances
from the side of the road to the point of impact.
Emergency - Breakdown
If you should have the misfortune to suffer a breakdown you need
to make immediate contact with the local telephone number given
to you at the time of collecting the Vehicle.
Fuel
Your vehicle will be handed over to you with a full tank and you
will be expected to return it with a similar full tank. Any
difference may be charged on your Credit Card. If your gauge does
not show a full tank when accepting delivery, please tell this to
the employee of the company who will make an appropriate note on
the Vehicle Hire Contract.
Green Card
A Green Card which is proof of the Insurance of the vehicle will
be supplied with the documents.
Insurance - General
Your hired vehicle is covered by Insurance for being driven in
Portugal. Taking the vehicle out of Portugal requires the
agreement of the Car Rental Company plus an extra Insurance Fee.
Most Insurance details are explained in some detail under our
heading C.D.W.
Personal Accident Insurance
A Personal Accident Insurance can be arranged upon request.
Legal Vehicle Documents
Portuguese law requires drivers when in a vehicle to have in
their possession the documents proving the ownership and insurance
of that vehicle. The Driver must also have in their possession a
proof of their own identity such as a Passport or ID and an
up-to-date Driving License. Spot road checks by police are a common
feature in Portugal.
Personal Belongings
It is a sensible rule never to leave any articles of worth on view
in the vehicle or leave it unattended when possessions are inside
and out of view. Always secure the windows and doors when leaving
the car. Insurance claims do not cover an unsecured vehicle.
Robbery
Phone call the police using the emergency number 112 and ask for
them to come to your location or alternatively drive to the nearest
Police Station to make the report. A copy of this Police report will
be required in an insurance claim.
Vehicle Check
Before getting into the hired vehicle walk around it to check for
any scratches or dents and if any found make sure it is recorded on
the paper you sign for the car. Check all the mirrors for correct
positions as they often are out of line. Check the level of the fuel
tank. At night familiarise yourself with the light controls before
driving. Check to see that the car documents are safely in the
vehicle. Drive off keeping to the left hand side of the road (your
passenger will be on the curb side), and have a good holiday.
